You should have a pilot light which stays on even if the fire place is off. If not then get a long match and hold it near the gas burner and “slowly” turn the gas on. Be careful though, don’t turn the gas up too high or you may get a burst of flame and make sure that you always turn the gas off when you’re not using it.

You should be able to, but do this first, turn gas on just slightly…you should be able to hear it hiss out, if you can’t turn on the gas this way it would be best not to proceed. If you can hear the gas get a long grill lighter or fireplace match ready, turn on gas slightly..it should ignite, then use the valve to adjust the flame height. hope this helps you:)

You should be able to operate the fireplace even without power. The wall switch is a low-voltage switch that is not connected to power, only to the gas valve. The switch is powered by the pilot light; the pilot light produces millivolts which run through the switch, and the switch opens and closes the circuit. This is a great reason to have a gas fireplace in an area where outages are common.
